The rancher used this as a warning to the other coyotes,
one predator to another,
Oklahoma is a beautiful state and exploring the back roads was one of my favorite activities. Every chance I got, I would fill up the gas tank and be gone for the day. Many times it was with no set destination in mind, each turn being decided on the fly.
I will never forget my surprise when I turned down a little country road to a scene that told part of the reality of ranch living. I had heard of this, but to actually see dead coyotes thrown over a barbed wire fence line is just so powerful and sad. Pulling my car over, I just sat in shock. Sometimes there are just no words to adequately describe the horror of a situation.
It was quiet on that road, the only sound was the Oklahoma wind rustling through golden grasses. Many coyote paw prints in the muddy ditch gave testimony of what had occurred. This pack had dared to hunt in ranch land. Camera in hand, I felt the need to record what I had witnessed. This pictures only shows four but there were more coyotes hung up on the fence further down the line.
I have hesitated to post this photo. I am not making any judgements, one way or another. I leave that up to you. All I can say is that even now, years later, I still feel a sadness about man’s impact on the environment and I don’t know what the answer is.
